(Kurt with a massive Muskegon River winter steelhead)
Here’s Kurt from the east side of Michigan with some outstanding winter steelhead including this monster 15lb buck pictured top.

Some days are better than others and this day was clearly one of those special days with several massive steelhead brought to the boat including another 13+ pound buck (photo above).
(Buck number #4 from today)
Timing could not have been better today as we got a solid few hours of fishing in before the strong gusts of wind and rain started later in the afternoon.

Steelhead anglers sometime underestimate the fight of these winter steelhead, assuming they lost some of that power as they rest in winter lies waiting for that spring warm up. Well guess again as these steelhead caught in winter months fight just as hard if not harder than steelhead caught any other time of the year. Kurt can attest first hand just how hard these winter steelhead fight with multiple aerial jumps and drag burning runs across the river in seconds. There is no such thing as a small steelhead as they all feel like hooking a rocket propelled missile that never stops fighting.

Water levels are on the rise as this massive warm front melted a considerable amount of snow in just the last 48hours. The good news is this strong push of water will bring more steelhead up to add to the already outstanding number of steelhead that are here. The cold front the next few days will make things tricky but as head late into next week we warm back up hopefully just as the water levels start to recede making for some excellent winter steelhead fishing again!
