With the warm days mixed with cooler nights and colder water temps the early fall caddis hatch is starting to explode! Water temps are still warm hovering at the 70 degree point. With cooler days and cold nights in the forecast the dry fly fishing for trout on the Muskegon river is getting good. The caddis hatch yesterday was very strong! This really nice spotted rainbow was taken on a small #18 caddis pattern.
Rises from feeding trout this time of year are selective. Patients is key. Focus on breaks in the water current around structures (i.e. rocks / boulders) in the river near drop off points in close proximity of vegetation or weed beds. Trout use these obstacles in the river to break the current, allowing them to hold in the slow water side seam side and ambush flies as they pass down stream on the faster side seam of the current break.
Migratory big game fish are on the move. Good sign of great things to come!
