Winter months offer some of the best steelhead fishing on the Muskegon river. Year after year we catch & release some of the biggest & best steelhead in the calm of winter. During these months from late November thru the end of February, migratory steelhead gang up in slow moving deep pools. These locations provide the warmest water temps and best flow rates allowing these steelhead to rest as their body metabolism adjusts to the cooler water (below 40 degrees).
Last year, the biggest push of migratory fall steelhead didn’t occur until early December. Hook-ups last year with steelhead the first week of December went from a few a day to double digit hook-ups. This fall is following suit as greater numbers of large size steelhead are making their way up the river system. Steelhead numbers are increasing rapidly as we get closer to the colder weather and higher water flows. Keying these winter lie locations throughout December thru February produces some of the biggest steelhead of the year.
Here’s one of them!
